Music From Slovenia
The music of Slovenia is closely related to German, Austrian and Croatian because of its common history and Alpine and littoral culture. In the minds of many Slovenes and foreigners, Slovenian folk music means a form of polka that is still popular today, especially among expatriates and their descendants in the area of Cleveland, Ohio. In fact Slovenian folk music consists of many different styles and is far from being only polka and waltz. The history of modern Slovenian music can be traced back to the 5th century. Folk music includes velike goslarije, a type of big band music, the bowed zither and panpipes, and rural harmony singing. Slavko Avsenik is one of the most influential and popular polka musicians in the world. Oberkrainer music, which the Avsenik Ensemble popularized, remains very popular today and is always a strong candidate for folk music awards in Slovenia and Austria. Slavko and his brother, Vilko, are usually credited as the pioneers of Slovenian popular music, having solidified its style in the 1950s.

De muziek van Slovenië is verwand aan Duitsland, Oostenrijk en Kroatië wegens zijn gemeenschappelijke geschiedenis van de alpen en zijn cultuur. Voor vele Slovenen en buitenlanders betekent de Sloveense folkmuziek een stijl van polka die nu nog steeds populair is, voornamelijk onder geemigreerden en hun nakomelingen in het gebied van Cleveland, Ohio. De Sloveense volksmuziek bestaat uit vele verschillende stijlen, en er is meer dan enkel polka’s en walsen. De geschiedenis van moderne Sloveense muziek kan naar de 5de eeuw worden terug geleid. De volksmuziek omvat velike goslarije, een soort big bandmuziek, met zither en panfluit en gezongen harmonieën. Slavko Avsenik is één van de invloedrijkste en populairste polka muzikanten in de wereld. Oberkrainer muziek, die het Avsenik Ensemble populariseerde, is tegenwoordig nog steeds populair. Het is altijd een sterke kandidaat voor folk muziekprijzen in Slovenië en Oostenrijk. Slavko en zijn broer, Vilko, worden de oorspronkelijke pioniers van Sloveense populaire muziek genoemd, hun Oberkrainer stijl werd in de jaren 50 ontwikkeld.
